What is Kickstarter?

Print

This December, Matt and I are launching a Kickstarter campaign to bring my illustrated children’s book, The Advent Storybook, to life.

What is Kickstarter?

Kickstarter is a company that enables a group of people to pool their resources and create new products.  It’s called “crowd-funding” because a community of people unites in order to fund and create something new.  Everyone contributes a little bit, and together, a new book (or game, or gadget, or piece of art) is born!

How does it work?

Kickstarter uses “all-or-nothing” funding.  Each project manager calculates the costs of creating their product and sets an initial goal.  They create a Kickstarter page and video displaying their dream.  People pledge money to help, and if that initial goal is reached, the product is created and everyone receives the product (and any extra rewards included).  If the goal is not reached, no money changes hands and no product is created.  This means that if you pledge money, your money will only be taken if the goal is reached and product is created…if you give money, you will also get the product (in our case, The Advent Storybook).

How can I help?

We’re planning to launch our campaign on Dec 4, and it will last until Jan 3. During that time period, anyone interested can visit our Kickstarter page on the Kickstarter website; look at the book description, video, and illustrations; and browse the pledge amounts.  As each person pledges what they can, we will get that much closer to reaching our initial goal and sending the illustrated book to the printing press…and then to your house!

So, spread the word!  Share this post and talk about our Kickstarter page/campaign once it’s launched.  We need everyone to come together to make this happen!

What are pledges?

We will have pledge amounts ranging from $1 all the way up to $5,000.  Everyone who pledges $10 or more will receive a digital, e-book copy of The Advent Storybook.  Everyone who pledges $25 or more will receive both an e-book version and a paperback copy, along with other neat rewards.  At $50, you’ll get an e-book, a paperback, and a hardcover copy, plus other rewards (like a PDF that shows the development of Ian’s illustrations).  The more you are able to pledge, the more copies and rewards you will receive (if our goal is reached!)  If we don’t reach our goal, you won’t lose any money and you won’t receive the book or rewards, because we won’t have the funds to create them.

Who are you?

I’m a wife; mom to 3 young children; and a registered nurse.  I grew up in church (and spent several years in different countries as a missionary kid), but I didn’t really understand Jesus or my own need to be rescued until my mid-20’s.  Before then, I tried very hard to be good enough for God and good enough for everyone else.  When I finally realized that I can never be good enough, my striving ceased and my dancing began!  I finally understood that Jesus came precisely because I could never be good enough and could never truly love on my own.  I initially wrote this book for my own children, hoping to show them that all people need to be rescued and that Jesus is that Rescuer.  After I wrote it, I felt God prompting me to publish it and make the story of His rescue available for other families and kids, as well.

What is The Advent Storybook?

The Advent Storybook contains 25 beautifully illustrated Bible stories that can be read aloud as a family each day in December.  Beginning with Creation, the stories travel chronologically through ancient history, tracing God’s recurring promise to rescue us.  The stories include people such as Abraham, Jacob, Joseph, Ruth, Daniel, and Isaiah.  The focus of each story, however, is not on these characters–it is on showing the beauty of God’s grace in rescuing people and restoring our ability to love and know we are loved.  The focus is on God working through broken people in order to make everything good and new again, like it was in the beginning.  The stories are clear and simple, written with 4-8 year olds in mind.  We are also designing an ornament for each day featuring Ian Dale’s illustrations.  The Advent Storybook enables families to create a new Christmas tradition centered on truly understanding and celebrating the coming of our Rescuer.

The Advent Storybook Team

So far, the team working on bringing this book to life includes:

  • me (the author)
  • my fantastic editor, also named Laura (who has been an editor for over 20 years)
  • my husband, Matt (my personal copy editor and skilled video producer); and
  • Ian Dale, an exceptional illustrator/designer (his work is amazing!)

Now, we’d love it if you could join the team and help us make this dream a reality!

    1. We’ll have a hardcover available! I love his work, too–Ian’s illustrations are outstanding. I love how well he portrays faces and relationships. We’re planning to launch this December 4. We’d be happy to send you an email when it begins! And thank you for being a part of making the book happen!
